Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What happens during International Nature Journaling Week?

A. It’s a celebration of nature journaling! Everyone is encouraged to experience nature through nature journaling from June 1 to June 7.  We provide daily themes with different forms of prompts on the website, through emails, and through social media to inspire you to try something new.  Some people organize their own local events to celebrate the week or to explore the themes in a group. We also love to see what you create.  If you like you can share your work by joining the private Facebook group or using #naturejournalingweek in your social media.  You can learn more here.

Q. How do I register?

A. There’s no need to register, but if you’d like to receive daily reminders throughout the week by email you can sign up for the newsletter here.  There’s more information on how to participate here

Q. Is there a cost to participate?

A. International Nature Journaling Week is free!  This week is provided as a gift for everyone by many people who volunteer their time and skills so that participants around the world can experience the joy of nature journaling. We do appreciate support of any amount that people are able to give.  These help cover the behind-the-scenes cost of running the event. You can support the week here

Q. What materials do I need?

A. Whatever you already have is perfectly fine! Our hope is for people to get out and have fun! It’s not really about the end product. Some of the days some of the guides may suggest specific materials to try out, but you can substitute whatever you have. This page has useful information to keep in mind.

Q. I can’t draw. How can I participate?

A. We are so glad that you’re here! International Nature Journaling Week is for absolutely everyone, no matter what your perceived skill level is.  You will find lots of encouragement here. If you prefer writing you may enjoy reading the many blogs that people have written. During INJW 2021 we had a beautiful session on writing from Emilie Lygren that you can find here.

Q. When are the events?

A. Each day there will be an email with ideas for the daily theme and information about live events if there are any that day.  Some days will have pre-recorded videos that you can watch on your own time to learn something new or be inspired. Some days will have live online events. The schedule will be posted here, and there will be more information in the daily emails.

Q. What if I can’t attend the live event? Are they recorded?

A. Because this is an international event the live events may be held at different times (including the middle of the night for some) to allow people all over the world to participate.  Therefore the week is planned so that you don’t need to attend the live events to fully enjoy the week.  Any live events are recorded and posted on the program pages once they are ready, which is usually the next day.

Q. When will the video recordings be available?

A. As long as technology cooperates will we post the recordings of any live events on the program page for that day as soon as possible.  Usually they will be available the next day.  If something happens and they don’t get posted right away, there are many other resources on the website and in the daily emails that you can use to explore the daily theme. The pre-recorded videos to support the daily themes will be uploaded to the program pages each day.

Q. What happens after International Nature Journaling Week?

A. That’s up to you!  We hope that you carry some of what you experience during this special week throughout your year. All of the resources will remain online all year so you can return to them again and again.  You can even look at all of the videos, prompts, and resources from previous years here!  There are more ideas on how to continue your nature journaling practice here.
